Shirley was born on March 20, 1931 in Decatur, Illinois, the daughter of Velma Lee and Bertha Alice (Gardner) Parker. She attended Millikin University for one year after graduating from Stephen Decatur High School. She went on a blind date one night and shortly after that date she married Vernon Max Hays on July 8, 1950. Shirley loved to travel with her husband. She also enjoyed her flowers and cooking but most of all she was a devoted Christian and was a lifelong member of Life Foursquare Church.
Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Vernon; two children, Linda (Roy) Peters and David Hays; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; two nieces and sister-in-law, Jean Parker.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jack.
