James Alexander Arbuckle was the sixth child born to Thomas and Jane Davis Arbuckle. He came with his parents to Rives County, (now Henry) Missouri as a child. He would marry Amanda M. Hunkel on June 19, 1842 in Henry County and they had 7 children: Thomas Matthew (Dick), Jane, George (Guy), John (Jack), Mordica (Mortimer), Scott and Ellenora (Ella). The family lived for a time in Calhoun, Henry County, Missouri where James was a prosperous plantation owner. They moved on to Paola, Kansas where James helped plan the townsite. Family history says that he was a chief spy in the Confederate Southern Secret Service, however, if he served there it was before the Civil War because he died in 1861. He also was an original member of the Masonic Lodge in Kansas. It is said but not proven that some of his sons road with Quantrill's Raiders. He was said to have been the keeper of the complete history of his Arbuckle family and of both the secret lodge books and the army secrets service. It is also said that all of these were burned by Northern Raiders. James property was entered into Probate on December 28, 1961 and proven on August 22, 1862. His ex-wife, Amanda Miller is named. It is recorded in Miami, Kansas. James it NOT buried near his father in Henry County, Missouri.
