  • Death 29 Jul 1891
  • Burial Peebles, Adams County, Ohio, USA

Some sources list John's DOB as 9/2/1830. However, "History of Scioto County, Ohio" lists it as 9.25.1830. I will go by his tombstone.

John was born in Scioto County, Ohio, near the village of Rarden. His parents were Matthew Williams and Elizabeth Jones, married April 6, 1815 in Adams County, Ohio. I believe his paternal grandparents were John Williams and Delilah Cain (born about 1795, in Kentucky). I believe his maternal great-grandparents were James A. Cain (born 1739 in Augusta, Virginia - died Feb 1, 1836 in Jackson Twp, Adams County, Ohio) and Elizabeth Custer (b. 1751 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - died August 10, 1818 in Jackson Twp, Adams County, Ohio).

The following information is taken from "Pioneer Sketches" found in the book History of Scioto County:
"John Williams, better known as "Rocky" Williams, was born in Scioto County near Rarden . . . The only education he had was that of the common schools of the vicinity. He was a tall, slender man, with very black hair, and was the most popular man who ever lived in Brush Creek Township. For sixteen consecutive years, he was Assessor of his township, and was also township Treasurer for two or three terms. In his political views he was a Democrat. His occupation was a farmer, but at the same time his energy was such that he engaged in buying and selling lumber...He was one of the best businessmen in his township. There was no new enterprise project in his community in his period of business activity which covered all of his life from the age of twenty, in which he did not have a part. He promoted all public enterprises. He was a man of very firm purposes and good judgment. He had most excellent qualities of mind and heart, and when he died he was more generally missed by the community than any man who ever lived in it before, or in his time" (pages 873-874).

"Rocky" married Sloma Hibbs, daughter of Samuel Sweeney Hibbs and Sarah Catherine Ann Tener, in 1862. They had at least three children: Eliza, Charles, and Della Pearl, two of whom appear in the photo. Charles is the 7th person in row two; Eliza is in the same row holding her toddler daughter, Mary Newman; Della Pearl died in 1891 and is not in the photo. John "Rocky" Williams stands next to Eliza and Mary.

Find A Grave has the Newman Family Cemetery listed in Peebles, Ohio. Actually, it is located approximately 10-11 miles east of Peebles, about 1-2 miles west of Rarden, Ohio on State Route 73. Saloma and "Rocky" are buried in the older, more wooded section of the cemetery. As one walks down the hill in this section of the cemetery, Saloma and John are buried at the bottom of the hill, over to the left, near a creek.
