Son of Elmer and Pearl Elizabeth (Aldrich) Swagerty, Darrell graduated from San Jose High School, then attended University of the Pacific in Stockton. On April 26, 1942 he married Nilma O'Connell in San Jose. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He owned and operated a service station in Santa Clara until he retired . In 1980 he and Nilma moved to Greenbank, but he continued operating his service station until 1985. In 1991 they moved to Coupeville.

He was survived by his wife Nilma; one daughter, Darrellyn Currier; one son, Keith M. Swagerty; five grandchildren, Matt Swagerty of Aptos, California, Mrs Brent (Kari Bren) Hoke of Seattle, Keith Currier of Richmond, Virginia and Laura Currier of Coupeville; and two brothers, Clem and Jack Swagerty, both of Walnut Creek, California.
