Earl Peirce Aalseth, Sr., 80, of Billings, died Dec. 3, 2004, after suffering a severe stroke.

Earl was born Oct. 20, 1924 in Mitchell, S.D. At age 17, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving for four years. In 1952, he graduated from South Dakota School of Mines with a BS degree in Geological Engineering. Earl worked for Amerada Oil until 1958, moving to Billings in 1955. He began working for Banker's Life Insurance Company, which later became The Principal, in 1960 and continued there until his retirement in 1990.

Earl married Loraine Abeln in 1950 and they had four children. He was involved with a number of service clubs and groups in Billings over the past 49 years, including Boy Scouts, Optimists, Big Sky Barbershop Chorus, Pioneer Kiwanis, Golden K Kiwanis, Back Country Horsemen of Montana, Mended Hearts and Midland Empire Pachyderms. Earl and his family have been members of the First United Methodist Church for 49 years. Hunting, fishing, hiking, backpacking and caring for and riding his horses were some of his favorite things to do. He especially enjoyed riding in the 1989 Centennial Cattle Drive. The last 11 years of his life, he was a devoted caregiver for Loraine after she became disabled.

He is survived by his wife, Loraine; son, Earl Aalseth, Jr., his wife, Dorothy and their daughter; daughter, Carole Dellinger, her husband, Bob, and their children, Matthew, Elizabeth and Andrew; daughter, Robin; and daughter, Sarah Holmes, her husband, Scott, and their children, Aaron and Heidi. He also is survived by his sister, Carole Peterson; his brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Charlotte Aalseth; and sisters-in-law, Loyola Aalseth and Ruth Aalseth; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Esther Aalseth, and brothers, Robert, Marvin, Leroy, and Ralph.

Funeral service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Saturday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. Cremation and inurnment will follow at a later time. Memorials are suggested to Special K Ranch of Columbus. Arrangements are by Smith Downtown Chapel.
