Mr. Gilbert was born July 7, 1918, in Lafayette, IN, to the late Harry Lester and Opal Lucille (Bryant) Gilbert. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during WWII. He was a sergeant in the army, where he received four purple hearts.

He was a school bus driver for 30 years in the Reddick and Herscher area. He also farmed in Reddick for many years.

Surviving are his extended family, Marjorie (Harold) Mahler of Gardner, Patricia (Donald Sr.) Farrer of Lemont, William (Faye Lynn) Malek of South Wilmington, and Deborah (James) Kratochvil of Gardner; four nieces, Shirley Beatty of Auburn, Ind., Kathryn Dove of Butler, Ind., Barbara Reinhart of Nelson, Mo., and Angie Colclasure of Essex, Ill.; and four nephews, Keith Anderson of Auburn, Ind., Michael Anderson of Butler, Ind., Phillip Bryant of Plainfield, and Rodney Bryant of Essex.

He was preceded in death by his special friend, Vivian (McComb) Malek Wise; and several brothers and sisters.
