Mary Edith Hosmer was born in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Northwestern University and married Gordon Gilbertson in 1947. They moved to Oregon, first to Tillamook and later to Salem, where they raised their three children.

After her children were grown, Mary Edith studied for and received her Masters degree in Library Science at the University of Oregon, and became a librarian at the Willamette University College of Law in Salem.

Mary Edith was predeceased by her husband, Gordon, and son, Douglas. She is survived by by her daughter, Meredith Smith of West Linn; son, Grant Gilbertson of Salem; and grandchildren Brock Gilbertson, Clark Smith, Claire Weeks (Mike), and Hunter Gilbertson; and great-grandson, Ian Gilbertson.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, September 18 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Salem. Contributions in memory of Mary Edith may be made to the church, at 5090 Center St. NE, Salem, Or 97317.
