2 KILLED IN COLLISION

A log truck driver from Arkansas and an Eagletown woman died at the scene of a fiery truck-car crash Monday afternoon.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, both Debra Kessler, 47, Eagletown, and Roger D. Ashbrooks, 43, Dierks, Ark., died of massive injuries on U.S. 70 five miles east of Broken Bow at 2:49 p.m.

The accident took place shortly before the road transitions from two-lane to four-lane, near U.S. 70's intersection with Craig Road and next to the old Tiner School.

According to the report prepared by Trooper Rocky Green, the accident occurred when a 2005 Ford driven eastward by Debra Kessler, went left of center for unknown reasons and struck Dewayne Ashbrooks' westbound 2015 Westernstar semi-trailer truck head-on.

Both vehicles sustained catastrophic damage, with Debra Kessler's vehicle ending up overturned in a ditch on the south side of the road and Dewayne Ashbrooks' log truck overturned in lanes being prepared as new approaches to the new Mountain Fork Bridge.

Responders at the scene stated that it was believed that Debra Kessler died on impact.

The cab section of Dewayne Ashbrooks' log truck caught on fire after the accident. It's believed that Dewayne Ashbrooks perished in the fire, according to multiple witnesses at the scene.

Units from the Broken Bow and Eagletown fire departments responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze. BBFD firefighters then freed the bodies of both accident victims. This process took approximately one hour.

The condition of both drivers of the crash was still under investigation at the time of the report.

The State Medical Examiner's Office was notified of the incident.

The primary cause of the crash was listed as "left of center" on Green's report.

Assisting Green at the accident site were Troopers Brad Dansby, Joe Jefferson, Brandon Johnson, Lt. Shane Allen of the Troop E Detachment and Trooper C.L. Parkins of the Troop S Detachment, along with firefighters, the McCurtain County Sheriff's Department, the Choctaw Tribal Police and possibly others.

Accident response, investigation and clean-up resulted in U.S. 70 through the area being shut down for around three hours.

The wreck was McCurtain County's third fatal accident in the last two and a half weeks.
