SHOCKING DEATH OF A TRADESMAN - Leamington Spa Courier - 13th May 1865
***************************************************************************
On Thursday afternoon, a young man who had only recently commenced business as a grocer, in High Street, met with an accident, which unhappily proved fatal. The deceased (Mr Wakefield) left home in the morning with one of his assistants named Belcher, in a horse and four wheeled carriage, for the purpose of going to Henley in Arden, and some neighbouring villages.
They left Henley about half past two, and arrived at Bishopton Hill (about two miles from Stratford) at half past six. They descended a hill at a trot, and the dashboard pressing on the hind quarters of the horse caused it to kick, and smashing the dashboard it broke into a gallop. At the onset, the young man Belcher jumped out, and escaped unhurt; but the owner, Mr Wakefield, in attempting to do so, was thrown to the ground with great violence, and with his feet catching in the reins, he was dragged about five yards. The assistant ran and found him perfectly insensible. He was taken away to Stratford, where Mr T. S. Burman, surgeon, attended, but his aid was useless, the poor young man having, he pronounced, been dead some three quarters of an hour.
An inquest was held on Friday, at the Shakespeare Hotel, before H. O. Hunt Esq., Coroner, and a respectable jury, of whom Mr Cranmer was the foreman, when the evidence was given as above narrated, and a verdict of "accidental death" was returned.
