Cynthia J. Peterson, age 99, of Elmira, NY died on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at home surrounded by her loving family. Cynthia was born March 10, 1917, the daughter of the late Frank R. and Lucy M. Manley.

She is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, E. Arden Peterson; son, Raymond E. Peterson in 1989; brother, Raymond F. Manley in 1958.

Cynthia is survived by her children, Norman A. Peterson, Susan J. (Thomas A.) Lynough of Elmira; grandchildren, Jessi (Justin) Beck, Thomas, Jeffrey, Matthew (Nicole) and Andrew (Jessica) Lynough; great-grandchildren, Cruz Beck and Michael Lynough; sister-in-law, Eleanor Peterson; numerous nieces and nephews.

She married Arden in 1944 during the war and they settled in Oak Ridge Tennessee, the sight of the Manhattan Engineering District where he was in the Army. They settled in Elmira after the war ended where they raised their loving children. She worked as private secretary to the Col. in charge of the hospital there. Cynthia was a 1939 graduate of Elmira College. Cynthia was a retired business teacher from the Elmira Free Academy. She was a member of Lake Street Presbyterian Church for over 80 years where she was active in the women's group and she was also an active volunteer with her husband and children at the Bethany Lutheran Church. Cynthia was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 60 years, a member of NYS Retired Teachers and Arnot Medical Auxiliary. Cynthia was a devoted wife and proud mother and grandmother.

Memorial donations may be made to Lake Street Presbyterian Church, 300 Lake St, Elmira, NY 14901, to Bethany Lutheran Church, 256 S Walnut St, Elmira, NY 14904, or to Arnot Ogden Auxiliary, 600 Roe Ave, Elmira, NY 14905. Calling hours will be held at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. from 4:00PM to 6:00PM on Thursday, August 11, 2016 with funeral service following. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
