John Troy Miller Jr., 86, of Callahan, FL went home to be with his Lord and Savior in his home by his wife's side on October 16, 2016. He was born May 16, 1930 in Jacksonville, FL to John and Bessie Miller. He graduated in 1949 from Andrew Jackson Senior High School. John went on to proudly serve our country in the US Navy for four years aboard the USS Antietum (CVA36) and on the USS Valcour (AVP455). His excellent mechanical skills proved very beneficial in operating the engine room. Among his many awards were National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two stars and Good Conduct Medal. After retirement from the US Navy, he was employed by Western Electric in Jacksonville, FL and retired after 35 years. During his years at Western Electric he was sent to Cape Canaveral to set up the communication system for missile launches. Later he was chosen to develop and build the first "In Home Classroom Communication System" for Dade County, FL. He was awarded recognition for his active service in the telephone industry and his dedication to his position. His passion in life was always to please God and serve Him faithfully. John was saved at an early age and was very faithful to our Lord and his church. He was a member of Berea Baptist Church on Main Street for years. John led many people to the Lord through his life. He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of West Hollywood for 25 years. He taught Sunday school and worked with the teen department along with his wife. John faithfully served in the kitchen on Wednesday nights, drove the bus for activities and a variety of things he was asked to do. After retirement from Western Electric, John & Bertie moved to Melrose, FL on Big Lake Sante Fe. They became members of Trinity Baptist Church in Keystone Heights and faithfully served there for years. Even though they lived in Callahan, FL, they are still active with the church and their Sunday school classes via the internet and E-Mail. In his spare time he built houses, fixed things and loved to fish on Big Lake Santa Fe and Key Biscayne Bay in South Florida. He invented a shrimp net for the boat and took his son Robert and friends every Friday night to the bay to catch shrimp. Everyone enjoyed those days and the beautiful memories that went with them. John also loved traveling with his family. He was a barrel of laughs and always a joy to be with. He will be enormously missed. John is survived by the love of his life, his loving wife: Bertie Cason Miller, daughter Cherie Lee Miller, numerous dear nieces, nephews and cousins and his loving Pomeranian "Copper". He was preceded in death by his parents John Troy Miller Sr., and Bessie Olive Miller, his son Robert Channing Miller, his brother Robert Eugene Miller along with many loving family members and dear friends. Arrangements are under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32205. A visitation will be held for friends on Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 12:00-1:00pm in the chapel. The funeral service will begin at 1:00pm with interment at Riverside Memorial Park. The Reverend James Peoples officiating. The family asks that donations in John's memory be made to Community Hospice of NE Florida.
