Gustavus P. Adams died at his residence, No. 335 Fifty-third street, at an early hour yesterday morning of pneumonia. Mr. Adams was one of the oldest commission merchants in Chicago.
His certificate of membership on the Board of Trade was issued to him in 1857, when in connection with his brothers J.Q., and Benjamin Adams he was carrying on a large milling and commission business. For a number of years thereafter he practically controlled the grain market of Chicago, and was the largest Western operator.
He was noted for generosity, and many prominent business-men of today owe to him their success.
About five years ago Mr. Adams had a stroke of paralysis while at his office in the Board of Trade, and from the effects of the attack he never fully recovered. He leaves a wife and several daughters.
