Son of Marshall and Gertrude Campbell, Marshall graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Caldwell, New Jersey. He later graduated from the New York State Merchant Marine Academy at Fort Schuyler, New York. He sailed the seas on several ships and while he was in Australia he met and married Avis Martin of Sydney in 1952. He transferred from the Merchant Marine to the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS Monrovia. After leaving the navy, Marshall and Avis moved to Australia. In 1954 they returned to New Jersey where Marshall earned a mechanical engineering degree at Rutgers University. In 1959 they returned to Australia. In 1964 they went to Portland, Oregon, then to Bellevue, Washington. He completed the requirements to become a professional engineer and worked at Boeing, SeaTac airport, the University of Washington, and Boeing again until he retired.

He was survived by four sons, Craig of Kirkland, Robert of Bothell, Andy of Clinton and David of Snohomish.
