Mr. James M. Rhoden, 88, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Mr. Rhoden was born on a farm in Columbia County, Florida on August 9, 1928.
He was a graduate of Columbia County High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. I n 1952 he married his wife of 62 years, June Smith Rhoden, who preceded him in death. After marriage, they lived for a short time in Savannah, Georgia, returned to Jacksonville, then later moved to Pembroke Pines, Florida before settling back in Jacksonville in 1986.
Mr. Rhoden worked for many years for Chevron, USA in both the Credit (Jacksonville, FL) and Marketing (Miami, Florida) departments. He loved his family deeply and was a role model to all who knew him. He served his Lord faithfully at Riverview Baptist Church (Jacksonville) and Pembroke Road Baptist Church (Miramar) in many capacities prior to attending First Baptist Church of Jacksonville in his retirement. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, and following numerous sports teams - his favorite being those at Florida State University.
He is survived by 3 children: Sheryl (Danny) Brown, Lori Rhoden, and David (Ellie) Rhoden; 4 grandchildren: Danny (Lynn) Brown, Jr., Brandilyn (Chris) Kessler, David James Rhoden and Cristina Rhoden; 4 great-grandchildren: Kyleigh, Gabriel, Elijah, and Corrin Perkins; 2 great-great-grandchildren: Addison and Edith; a brother: Carroll (Ruby) Rhoden; a sister: Callie Burnette; and numerous extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 in the Hobson Auditorium at First Baptist Church, 124 W. Ashley Street, with Rev. Mike Reed and Rev. Steve McCollum officiating. Burial will follow at 12:30 pm at Jacksonville National Cemetery. His family will receive friends on Monday, October 17, 2016 from 5-7 pm at PeeplesFamily Funeral Homes, North Jacksonville Chapel, 2220 Soutel Drive near Lem Turner Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association of Jacksonville or First Baptist Church of Jacksonville.
