Nanelle Wilkerson Castles , 95, passed away on June 17, 2010, at White Oak Manor in York.
Nanelle was the daughter of John Smith Wilkerson amd Elma Merritt Wilkerson. She was a graduate of Hickory Grove High School and Winthrop College, where she earned a B.S. degree in Business Education and a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling. She began her teaching career in Greer, S.C., teaching Business Education.
In 1951, she began teaching at Hickory Grove High School, where she taught business courses and also assisted with the school newspaper and was yearbook sponsor for many years. In her later years, at Hickory Grove High School, she established a guidance program for the school and became guidance counselor as well as teacher. She influenced the lives of many young people and Hickory Grove High School was known for its high percentage of students that completed college degrees. She also worked with the adult education program. She loved teaching and worked with students with patience and understanding. She finished her career at York Comprehensive High School.
Nanelle was a member of the National Education Association, the S.C. Education Association, the York County Education Association, the S.C. Business Education Association and the S.C. Guidance Association.
She was a life-long member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, the Ladies Bible Class and the United Methodist Women. She was well known for her crafts, handiwork and delicious pound cakes and enjoyed working with the fall bazaars at Mt. Vernon. She loved her rose garden and shared beautiful arrangements with friends and family.
In addition to her parents, Nanelle was preceded in death by her husbands, Joe Eggar Hood and Robert Leon Castles ; a sister, Carmen Wilkerson Anderson; and a brother, William Smith Wilkerson.
