Eau Claire Daily Free Press May 1 1890 page 1:...originator of the labor movement in Norway. Died at the residence of his son, Dr. A.D.H. Thrane of a stroke of paralysis. The following was found among his papers after his death-"I wish to be buried without ministerial service and religious ceremony. No funeral sermon to be delivered at the home or the grave.
Only outspoken freethinking can follow me to the grave.
My coffin to be of the plainest and cheapest kind.
Inasmuch as many of my friends have assured me that after my death a large and magnificent monument will be erected to my memory,..I hereby declare it my most decided wish that no such monument in memory of me shall be erected after my death. A very plain iron slab upon which my date of birth and death, and name are inscribed are to be placed at my grave."
Later funeral notice in Eau Claire WI. indicates burial at Lakeview cemetery, Eau Claire, WI. The memorial in Norway for the same man may be a memorial cenotaph.

Eau Claire Daily Telegram June 16 1923 p 3 included with the obit for his son Arthur: Marcus Thrane lies buried in Lakeview cemetery alongside his 2 beloved bloodhounds, his inseparable companions in the declining years of his life, spent in this city, a man to whose memory now stand in various sections of Norway many statues and monuments.

1949 Feb. 3 item Barland notes Marcus body to be removed to Norway. Unverified. Newspaper?I believe Narcus Moller Thrane (see death record) is Markus Thrane, mentioned in the book, "The Husmand" by Esther Hagen MacPherson.

This book is available at University of Wisconsin - Stout, as a PDF, page 35.

Esther MacPherson writes a little about Markus Thrane in connection to her grandparents, Lars and Raghnild Gulbranson of the Haselhaugen Husmand Farm, near Honefoss, Norway, 1875 to 1877.

Markus was inspired by the French Revolution. He decided Norway needed to pass reform laws and organized events in Norway.

Esther wrote that Markus Thrane died in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

See memorial Marcus Moller Thrane for his photo and further information.

Update from mjshistory (#47447356) dated 14 Oct 2016:

"I believe the memorial pages for him and wife in Norway are memorial cenotaphs. I have located newspaper articles from Eau Claire, WI. detailing the deaths and burials of Marcus Moeller Thrane in 1890 and also his son Arthur, and included relevant information on the memorials in Eau Claire. Marcus specifically wrote in his last papers that no memorial monument was ever to be placed at his grave (at Lakeview cemetery in Eau Claire.) A plain iron slab with his name and dates was the only marker to be placed. To date I have not located any remnant of it, probably under sod?" See 171300229.
