Wayne T. Newton was a loving husband, father, papa, uncle, cousin, friend and coworker. Everyone who knew Wayne looked up to him and found a diamond in the rough! He lived a very full and active life.

Wayne was born in Pensacola, FL and moved with his parents to El Cajon, CA as a young boy. He graduated from Granite Hills High School in 1965 and remained part of the Eagle community by coordinating several of the reunions. Education was very important to Wayne, he continued to learn throughout his life. He earned his first degree from San Diego State University, a Bachelor of Science of Degree in Business Administration with Emphasis in Information Systems in 1975. He furthered his education by earning a Master of Business Administration degree in Quantitative Analysis from National University in 1980, and completed his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1984 from National University School of Law. Wayne practiced law and was a member of the State Bar of California.

Wayne was a decorated Captain for the US Navy, serving a total of 38 years combined active duty and reserve service. Wayne joined the Navy as an Enlisted member in 1968 and served in several commands in San Diego, CA including: Naval Air Station Miramar, Tactical Air Control Squadron Twelve, Fighter Composite Squadron 13 (VFC-13), Fighter Squadron 126 and Naval Special Warfare Command, Coronado, CA. During the Viet Nam War, Captain Newton performed duties within Supporting Arms Coordination Centers controlling aircraft and naval gunfire in support of numerous Amphibious Landings. In addition to the California bases, Wayne also served at the Commanding Officer of Naval Reserve Naval Special Warfare Group One Detachment 22 at the United States Submarine Base, Bangor, WA in 2001.

Upon completion of his command in 2003, he was assigned his final duties as the Deputy Commander for Naval Reserve Harbor Defense Command Unit 111. Captain Newton was mobilized in 2003 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom providing Naval Coastal Warfare Force Security Operations in Kuwait.

Captain Newton’s personal decorations include the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Commendation Medal with 1 Gold Star, and the Navy Achievement Medal with 1 Gold Star.

In addition to his military service, Wayne had a full civilian career. He was employed as a Quality Engineering Site Manager with Raytheon, where he retired in 2010. Previously, he worked as a Software Engineering Senior Manager with Cubic Defense Applications in San Diego, CA where he developed Tactical Air and Ground Combat Training Ranges for the United States Navy, the United States Air Force, and the United States Army. He also was a Senior Software Engineer for Unisys Corporation where he developed advanced submarine communications systems for the United States Navy.

During retirement, Wayne stayed busy remodeling his “Double Diamond Desert Miracle”, a desert sanctuary in Ocotillo Wells, CA where his family all enjoyed going to build memories riding quads and dune buggies, playing poker, and enjoying bonfires. At the “Double Diamond,” Wayne was also a friend of the critters. The doves, lizards, coyotes and other wildlife surrounded his porch for food and friendship.

Another part of his life that he enjoyed was socializing with his longtime friends including his Delta Sigma Phi fraternity brothers, high school classmates, Navy buddies, neighbors, colleagues, and family. Every Sunday morning Wayne was so excited to post his Selfie before hitting the road, revving his engine and clenching a clutch down the freeway with the “Antique Motorcycle Club.”

Other hobbies and past times included: yo-yo artist, billiard expert, joke teller, magician, card trickster, World Series of Poker player, jack of all trades, and walking encyclopedia. In fact, all would agree, if you had a question, Wayne would know the answer!

Wayne passed on Labor Day, September 5, 2016 at 9:15 pm surrounded by his loving wife and family. He will be missed by all.
