Julius W. Baker, Sr., for more than 35 years a resident of Brandon, died at his home on Goldspink avenue at 4 o'clock Wednesday after a three days illness. He was 85 years old.
Mr. Baker was born in Ripton, April 19, 1850, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Baker and lived most of his life, before coming to Brandon, in Ripton and Middlebury. For 15 years he drove the mail stage from Middlebury to Ripton. He was also a carpenter by trade and owned a number of residences in Brandon which he greatly improved.
Although past his 85th birthday, Mr. Baker seldom missed his daily walk to the center of the village and continued to work about his places until his last illness.
He was twice married. His first wife, the former Emma Cushman, died in 1900. They had six children of whom the following survive: Mrs. W. G. Larrabee of Shoreham, Julius W. Baker of Brandon, Hugh C. Baker of Vergennes, Rollin A. Baker of Taunton, Mass., and Alverton Baker of Ludlow. A sixth, Mrs. E. J. Woodbury of Shoreham, died January 9, 1913.
Mr. Baker married a second time in 1904, the former Mrs. Emma Slosson Paine of Brandon. She died in 1918.
In addition to his five living children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive him.
The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at Johnson's Funeral Home. Rev. R. E. Ralph will conduct the services and burial will be in the family lot in Forest Dale cemetery.
