Bobby Joe Humphrey, 85, of Sallisaw, passed away Monday October 10, 2016 at the Oklahoma Veteran’s Center in Talihina, OK. Bobby Joe was born in Akins, Oklahoma on April 14, 1931 to Grover Cleveland and Emma Etta (Masterson) Humphrey. A total of (9) children were raised by Grover and Etta. He was born at the beginning of the Great Depression and times were hard on all residents of the United States. Since birth certificates were not a common document during this era and Bob understood the hardship of so many mouths to feed- he misrepresented his age in order to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1948.

He was stationed at multiple bases (10) within the United States from Ft Bragg, North Carolina to Fort Walters, Texas. In addition to his state side service, he was also stationed at Buchanan, Puerto Rico, USAG Baumholder, Germany, Ft. Magsaysay, Philippines, and US Army Garrison-Okinawa, Japan. During his time in the United States Army, Bob was in active combat in both the Korean and Vietnam wars.

He was awarded the Silver Star in 1963 during the Vietnam war for Gallantry Action Against and Enemy of the United States. He also received the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation. (3) Purple Hearts were awarded in- 1964-Vietnam War, 1963-Vietnam War, and 1953 Korean War. Other medals received were the Good Conduct (4 awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation, World War II Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal, National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, Combat Medical Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Korean War Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

In all he served twenty-two years with the United States Army and retired in 1970 as Sergeant- Major, E9.

In 1955, Bob fell in love and married his life-long partner Pearl Florencia Gimenez. She was his support during his times of service to his country and in his endeavors after multiple retirements. She is the mother to his four children and his constant companion for (61) years. She is the rock and glue that kept his dreams intact.

Upon his retirement, Bob used his educational skills obtained in the U.S. Military as a Physician Assistant and secured a job at Sparks Regional Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas where he managed the Emergency Room trauma unit.

After many years in the ER unit, he decided to educate himself and move his career path in a different direction. He obtained a degree as a Master Electrician and was offered a position as the Head Master Electrician of Fort Smith Public Schools. After many years of service to the public school system, he retired once more….so we thought!

As all who knew him - resting under the shade tree watching the day’s pass was not on his Bucket List. Bob re-focused his time on buying land and working the farm he had obtained for his family in the early 1960’s. There was no one in Sequoyah County that could build a straighter fence or work a harder day. Bob was driven by his personal desire to be the best at all he attempted.

Bob understood the importance of an education since he “officially” only received an 8th grade diploma. He acquired all of his other higher educations in Germany and implanted in his children the same importance. All four of his children attained college degrees and Bob was extremely proud of this accomplishment.

Bob had another set of accomplishments which taught him his most valued lessons in life: patience, love, and happiness. These accomplishments were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was never more proud or fulfilled as he was when they were in his presence.

Bobby J. Humphrey fought his most valiant battle in the last few years of his life. He took it on without fear and left this world a true “Hero”. He provided well for his family and through his service to his country ensured security for all citizens of the United State of America.

Bobby Joe was preceded in death by both parents and his siblings; Ather Lee, Donald, Buland, Garland, Wash, Edith, Icie and Vera.
