John Stoldt (Johann Joachim Ernst Theodorius Stolt aka John Stoldt) was born on 27 Sep 1824 in Jarmstorf, Nordwestmecklenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Johann Joachim Ernst Theodorius Stolt was married on 23 Oct 1851, to his first wife, Maria Sophia Ernestina Sachloff in Schorrentin, Mecklenburg, Deutschland . They had four children: Sophia Rudolphine Friederica Louise Stolte b. 07 Jul 1853 in Jarmstorf, Nordwestmecklenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany; Johann Friedrich Theodor Ludwig Stolt b. 28 Jun 1855 and died at age 3 on 04 Jul 1858 in Schorrentin, Mecklenburg, Deutschland; Wilhelm Christian Johanna Martin Stolt b. 09 Dec 1857 in Mecklenburg, Deutschland; and Dorette Sophia Christiana Johanna Stolt b. 29 Jul 1860 in Schorrentin, Mecklenburg, Deutschland d. 27 Sep 1860, almost 2 months old , in Schorrentin, Mecklenburg, Deutschland . He m. his 2nd wife, Christina Friederica Johanna Christiana Schmidt, on 04 Jun 1860 in Schorrentin, Mecklenburg, Deutschland. They had an unnamed child b. 28 Aug 1862 in Jarmstorf, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany who died on 28 Aug 1862 in Jarmstorf, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany at 2 days old. They then had a son Charles William Stolts (Johann Carl Friedrich Theodor Stolt) b. 10 Mar 1864 in Schorrentin, Mecklenburg, Germany. John Stoldt and his 2nd wife, Christina Friederica Johanna Christiana Schmidt, and children immigrated from Jarmstorf (a town under Gadebusch Evangelical Parish) in Gadebusch municipality, Nordwestmecklenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. They sailed in steerage on the Clipper Ship "Electric" from Hamburg, arriving on 11 December 1864 in New York. Their names were recorded on the passenger list as follows: Stoldt, J. 36 Farmer; Frederike 25 Wife, Sophie 7, Wilhelm 5, and Carl (Charles) 0.
The Stoldt family traveled to Western New York, settling in the town of Brandt. The 1870 U.S. Census for the town of Brandt, in Erie County, in Western New York states that John Stoldt was a Rail Road laborer. The 1870 Agricultural census lists John Stoldt with 8 Acres of improved land, 2 Milk Cows, and 1 Swine, Live Stock, Value $130, 10 Bushels of Corn, 20 Bushels of Potatoes, 200 Lbs. Butter, 4 Tons Hog and value of farm $400.
Their daughter Wilhelmina (Minnie) Darthen Stolts was b. 01 Mar 1866 and d. 13 Jan 1872 at the age of 5 in Town of Brant, Farnham, Erie, NY.
In 1875 John was living in a Plank house worth $50 and was working as a farmer. The 1878 Town of Brant Assessment Roll and other documents at the Brant-Farnham Historical Society, shows that John was living on lot 78 which consists of 25 acres worth $800 and having wheat, oats, corn, potatoes, cherries, pears and peaches as crops. He also had a dog and paid a dog tax of 50 cents.
The 1880 Census for Brant, N.Y. lists John Stoldt age 55 as a farmer, his wife Reka age 62 keeping house and his sons Charles 17, John 10 and Martin 7 working at a factory and a daughter Lena age 2.
According Bruce F. Stolts, John's great grandson, in 1881 John went west with his three sons Charles, Martin and John to homestead on a 160 acres in South Dakota. They left Western New York early in 1881 leaving his wife at home in Western New York. About three weeks after they had arrived John, the father, died in April, 1881, at the age of 56 years, 6 months, 6 days. He is buried in Green Hill Cemetery on 257th Street in Alexandria, SD. "My father died of pneumonia a week after we arrived in South Dakota," Mr. John W. Stolts recalled. The Stolts family rented their South Dakota farm (later sold it) and moved back east to Erie County, New York.
