The 1870 U.S. Census for the town of Brandt, in Erie County, in Western New York states that John Stoldt was a Rail Road laborer. The 1870 Agricultural census lists John Stoldt with 8 Acres of improved land, 2 Milk Cows, and 1 Swine, Live Stock, Value $130, 10 Bushels of Corn, 20 Bushels of Potatoes, 200 Lbs. Butter, 4 Tons Hog and value of farm $400.
Their daughter Wilhelmina (Minnie) Darthen Stolts was b. 01 Mar 1866 and d. 13 Jan 1872 at the age of 5 in Town of Brant, Farnham, Erie, NY.
In 1875 John was living in a Plank house worth $50 and was working as a farmer. The 1878 Town of Brant Assessment Roll and other documents at the Brant-Farnham Historical Society, shows that John was living on lot 78 which consists of 25 acres worth $800 and having wheat, oats, corn, potatoes, cherries, pears and peaches as crops. He also had a dog and paid a dog tax of 50 cents.
The 1880 Census for Brant, N.Y. lists John Stoldt age 55 as a farmer, his wife Reka age 62 keeping house and his sons Charles 17, John 10 and Martin 7 working at a factory and a daughter Lena age 2.
According Bruce F. Stolts, John's great grandson, in 1881 John went west with his three sons Charles, Martin and John to homestead on a 160 acres in South Dakota. They left Western New York early in 1881 leaving his wife at home in Western New York. About three weeks after they had arrived John, the father, died in April, 1881, at the age of 56 years, 6 months, 6 days. He is buried in Green Hill Cemetery on 257th Street in Alexandria, SD. "My father died of pneumonia a week after we arrived in South Dakota," Mr. John W. Stolts recalled. The Stolts family rented their South Dakota farm (later sold it) and moved back east to Erie County, New York.
