It is with great sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of DEREK WHITE STEVENS of Fairview, Texas, son of Robert and Lillian White Stevens, loving husband and life partner of Shirley White-Stevens, father to so many including his three sons Erik, Todd & Chad White-Stevens and Poppop (Grandpa) to Jasmine, Bradley, Cara and Jade.

Born on the 19th of July, 1942, in South Hampton, New York, of humble origin, Derek learned the foundation of his profession in Chemical Engineering at the University of Rochester from where he graduated in 1964. He did graduate work at Temple University, the University of Houston and MIT.

This was only the beginning of a brilliant career which spanned over the following 54 years and saw him working for and consulting on projects with a multitude of international companies including: ARCO, BP, Shell Oil, Valero, Santos and LyondellBasell where he was employed until his death.

As a sought after specialist in his field with a personal motto, “if we’re going to start something we give it our best shot,” he was the recipient of numerous outstanding achievement awards, holder and creator of two international patents on wet air oxidation and a Registered Nuclear Analyst for the Department of Defense (to mention a few).

Intimidating in size to some at 6’7” in his prime, those that knew him would describe Derek as an inspiration, leader, mentor, teacher and all round “Gentle Giant” with a heart of gold. Derek was a very giving person, always ready to give of his time and energy to help the less fortunate and those in need of his talents. He was known for his one on one mentoring and teaching of over 50 graduates / inexperienced chemical engineers and for his volunteer lecturing at several international universities. He was recognized as a high achiever for his voluntary contributions within the community and was the recipient of the 2004 Volunteer of the Year award by the Valero Energy Corporation for his work tutoring and mentoring high school students in Ardmore, OK.

Loved by Lots, friend to many, Derek will be truly missed by many people and is a great loss to our community.

To his family he was the leader, our dad, the rock; and words cannot describe their loss.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 15, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Allen, Texas. Interment will follow the service at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas.
