John was the son of Joseph Carroll and Edith Hollingsworth of Thomas Co., GA. He was born in Sampson Co., NC. The Carroll family moved to Thomas County, Georgia in 1835. On 28 Dec 1847, he married the widow Eleanor Bivens Dekle. Eleanor brought with her to the marriage three little children. Minerva, Anna and Edie Dekle. The family lived in Thomas County until 1857 when John purchased land in nearby Madison Co., FL.
At the age of 41 years, John enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Private on 8 March 1862 in Madison Co., FL. He served in Company E., 5th Florida Infantry, C.S.A. His service record indicates he took the Oath of Allegiance on 25 March 1865.
John and Eleanor had four children, Amanda, Emma, John T. and Alice Carroll. Amanda and Emma apparantly died young. John Thomas Carroll married Mary F. Weller and Alice married Jehue S. Price.
Eleanor died in Madison Co., Fl on 26 Jun 1868. By 1880, John and his son had moved to Suwannee Co., FL. In 1885 he was living in Orange County as was his daughter Alice Price.
