Frank, named for the beloved "Swamp Fox" General Francis Marion, was the eldest of the four children of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Brunthaver) Spohn. He was born on his parents' farm in Sandusky county, Ohio.

He died at the age of eighteen serving his country in the Union Army during the Civil War, at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri. He was a private in Company F, Seventy-Second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in the sixth month of his service. He died from "Phthisis pulmonalis," i.e. pulmonary tuberculosis.

His father, a veteran of the Mexican and the Civil War, had the sad duty of riding across middle America to retrieve Frank's remains and bring them home to rest with those of family.
