Marine Lance Cpl. Burgess was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twenty-nine Palms, California. Burgess was killed by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations. Ryan graduated from Meridian High School in 2003 and attended one year of college before deciding to join the Marines. He believed everyone should be grateful for our freedom and brave enough to earn that freedom. His marksmanship skills during boot camp earned him the Expert Rifle Marksmanship Badge. These skills were called upon during his two tours in Iraq, as he often served as a sniper. While in the Marines, he was a vehicle commander and squad leader. He was very proud of the responsibility the Marine Corps bestowed upon him. Ryan knew he was in danger in Iraq and told friends the last time he came home that he knew he wasn't coming back. He suffered a severe concussion and leg injuries when the Humvee he was riding in drove over an improvised explosive device about a month ago. He was awarded a Purple Heart and had been released from the hospital only about two days before being killed. Ryan loved life, his family, his girlfriend and adventure. Some of those adventures included rock climbing, kayaking, riding his quad, camping, traveling and spending time with his friends. He planned on finishing his college degree when he got out of the Marines and was already making plans to re-enroll. Here is what Ryan had to say about himself:
