Joshua Vann Carroll, 81, died on October 9, 2016, at Hubbard Hospice House, after being diagnosed on June 6, with stage 4 lung and brain cancer.

Vann was born February 7, 1935, the son of the late Spurgeon Cashwell and Ellen May Lewis Carroll. He grew up in Pitt County North Carolina, warmly supported by a loving family. He received a BSCHE from N.C. State in 1956, where he was Tau Beta Phi. Following his graduation, he reported for duty in the US Army Chemical Corps and served 18 months in Orleans, France. He joined Union Carbide in December of 1958, and spent 40 enjoyable years in Production and Engineering, retiring as a Principal Engineer in 1999. He received a MSE from West Virginia University in 1972, was a Registered Professional Engineer in WV and a member of AICHE.

Vann met and married the sunshine of his life, Anne Ten Eyck Carroll, on July 16, 1960.

He is survived by his loving wife, Anne; daughter, Sarah (Jean Sirius) of Oakland, Calif.; son, James (Marilyn); two grandchildren, Catherine and Ethan Carroll of Canal Winchester, Ohio; sister, Nancy C. Brooks and her husband, John of Raleigh, N.C. His extended loving family include his cousins from eastern North Carolina, Caroline and husband, Ray Long, Pattie and husband, Lloyd Winslow, Nanet Charles, and Frank and Paula Lewis of Winchester, Va. He was also lovingly accepted into Anne's family, including her brother, Bill Ten Eyck of Beaufort, S.C.; her brother-in-law, Keith Borgel of Las Vegas, Nev., and her Biddle cousins and El and Shelia McMeen of Huntingdon, Pa.

He was a 56-year member of Kanawha United Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and a longtime member of the Building and Grounds Committee. Vann was happiest when he had a problem to solve. He enjoyed his association with the Hanging Chads, where he served as the PPC (permanent picnic chairman). For many years, he picked up surplus food from Thomas Hospital and Kroger and delivered it to Manna Meals for West Virginia Harvest.

The family wishes to thank the following people for their excellent care and concern during the last 4 months: Dr. Jubelirer and his wonderful staff, especially Donna; Dr. Raga and his caring staff at the Radiology Department at CAMC Cancer Center; Dr. DePriest and his excellent staff at CPICU Memorial, especially Day nurses Jess and Kathleen and Joyce Vann's night nurse; Kanawha County Ambulance Driver Mark; and the staff at Hubbard Hospice House, especially Mindy, Sarah and Diane for their loving care.

The service to celebrate his life will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 12, at Kanawha United Presbyterian Church, Charleston with Rev. Patterson Lyles officiating. There will be a reception following the service, where the family will greet their friends in Fellowship Hall at the church. His ashes will be interred at Kanawha United Presbyterian Church Columbarium at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, it is his wish that donations be made to Manna Meal, 1105 Quarrier St., Charleston, WV 25301, or to Kanawha United Presbyterian Church, 1009 Virginia Street East, Charleston, WV 25301.
