His military career was in communications and security police, primarily in Strategic Air Command (SAC). Col. Madden retired from the Air Force after 30 years of service in November 1994 and continued to serve as liaison officer for the U.S. Military Academies for U.S. Speaker of the House Jim Wright. Friends remember him as a gregarious, fun-loving man who loved to tell stories (some of which had a grain of truth), travel with his wife and friends, and drink the occasional glass of wine. He loved to help others and he would never say no to anyone he knew that needed his help. He was affectionately known as Uncle HiLarryous by nieces and nephews, and as B-Dad by his grandchildren. He loved his family including cousins from all over this great nation such as Arizona, Louisiana and of course Texas.
He married Katherine Ann Armold in Biloxi, Miss., in 1966.
