English naturalist and writer. He was born of Quaker parents. After leaving a boarding school at the age of sixteen he joined his father's business in Surrey. He spent his spare time exploring and studying the Surrey countryside. In 1832 he was elected as editor of the club's journal, ‘The Entomological Magazine', and the following year became a fellow of the Linnean Society and one of the founder members of the Entomological Society of London and was elected a fellow of the Zoological Society in 1839. He was the founder and editor of the ‘Entomologist, Zoolofgist and Phytologist'. He wrote and published many books and papers on all kinds of natural history. His best known work is ‘History of British Ferns' published in 1840.
