REBECCA JANE (BEATTY) CULLINS
(Biographical sketch by sameelee 2016, update 2024)

Rebecca Jane Beatty was probably born in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in about 1762 based on her Rev. War Widows pension application of 1839.

She was the daughter of Joris (George) Beatty of Ulster County, New York. Her mother was probably Ann Cullins. A marriage between George Beatty and Ann Cullins has not been proven but it appears that she may have been his second wife and the mother of some of his children.

Alternatively, Jane's mother may have been Annaatjen (Annatje) Brink, her father's first wife. Because Ann Brink's death date is unknown, it is uncertain how many of George's nine children were hers.

Rebecca Jane Beatty and John Cullins were married in Hampshire County, Virginia. In her application for Revolutionary War widow's pension, Rebecca stated she could not recall if the marriage year was 1783 or 1784; banns were read in church three times but no marriage certificate was issued. Neither John nor Jane could read or write; they signed documents in the pension file with their mark.

John and Jane had at least nine children born in Virginia:

Sarah (Cullins) Williams (1784-1863)
George (1st) (1785-before 1789)
Hannah (Cullins) Craige (1787-1834)
George W Cullins (1789-1872)
John C Cullins (1791-1857)
Margaret Alsha "Alsey" (1794-1850)
Isaac Cullins (1795-1845)
Elizabeth (Cullins) Blunt (1796-about 1837)
Susannah (Cullins) Vernon (1799-1869)

Two children were born in Muskingum County, Ohio:

Henry Cullins (after 1802-_)
Jane Cullins (after 1802-_)

The family moved to Muskingum County, Ohio, in 1802, making the journey in a four-horse wagon. "...When they settled in Jefferson Township there were still plenty of Indians, and the country was a wilderness. John cleared up a piece of land in that township, but finally settled in Muskingum Township, where they resided for some time. They subsequently bought land in Washington Township, Muskingum County, where they remained for life."

On account of John's disability from his service with the Virginia troops in 1777, he was pensioned from 1 January 1834 and granted a yearly income of $40. [15]He was 75 when he died on 15 September 1837.

On 4 February 1839, Jane Cullins, 77, applied for a widows pension. Her claim was not allowed as John Cullins rendered less than six months military service which was the minimum length of service required by the pension law to entitle her to a pension.

Jane Cullins died after 1839. Some unsourced family trees report her death as 9 March 1843 but that date has not been proven as yet. John's Find A Grave memorial says he was buried in Washington Township (where they lived); Rebecca is probably buried with him.
