Anthony Mathew “Tony” Von Rueden, age 81 of West Fargo, ND peacefully passed away on October 10, 2016 in the middle of his living room under the care of his family and of Hospice. In fact his last good day was spent watching the Bison win and enjoying a great steak with chocolate cake for desert!

Tony was born on August 27, 1935 in Breckenridge, MN to Jerome “Rome” and S. Loretta (Minnehan) Von Rueden. He grew up there, except during WW II, when his family lived in Hastings, NE while his dad worked in a munitions depot. In 1953 he graduated from Breckenridge High School. After attending ND State School of Science in Wahpeton for one quarter his freshman year he enlisted in the US Air Force. He served a total of 8 months active duty and a little over 7 years inactive reserves.

Tony loved to dance and was often seen at the Pavilion in Breckenridge, MN dancing the jitterbug with Micki Willmert who he met while cruisin’ Wahpeton High with the guys after school. On December 27, 1956 they were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Wahpeton. They made their home in Wahpeton. They had five children and divorced in December, 1970. Tony moved to Fargo, ND in 1971 where he married Joyce (McGray) Wallock that year. Joyce also had two daughters from a previous marriage. They were married for 28 years until they divorced in 1998.

Having grown up with an Irish Catholic mother Tony possessed an incredible sense of humor and a razor sharp wit. He had a line and a story for every situation. In fact he was often asked to serve as an emcee for banquets. Tony certainly possessed the luck of the Irish. One year while hosting a Ducks Unlimited dinner he even pulled his own name out of the hat to win a boat. He got so excited that he dropped his glasses and stepped on them...yes, they let him keep the boat! He loved to play bingo on the weekends and often won some big pots.

Tony put his humorous side to good use and spent most of his life as a salesman although every time he tried to retire he would find another position that would accommodate his health. Just prior to his cardiac arrest 6 months ago he was still working three days a week at the car auction. He loved to hunt and fish. He watched a lot of football and baseball from his recliner. Tony loved people and he loved life.

He is survived by five of his daughters all residing in Fargo, ND: Dr. Michelle Von Rueden; Brenda (Wallock) Peterman; Theresa (Kirt) Helm; Nadine Wallock; and Deb (Craig) Penley. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Joshua and Brittni Tritchler; Kamy Puckett; Trista Peterman; Richard (Stacey) Peterman; and Hunter Konze; along with six great-grandchildren: Autumn Hoemberg and Kaden Puckett; Elijah and Isaac Schneider; Jaxon Schmit; and Emma Peterman. In addition he is survived by his eldest sibling: Sr. Loretta Von Rueden, Mitchell, SD. Tony also had a very close, loving relationship with his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter: Lori Kay; his 18 year-old son: Jerry; his parents; his sister: Rita Braun; and an infant brother: Mathew.

All are invited to share their stories about Tony from 2-4 PM in the cafeteria room at Nativity Catholic Church in Fargo on Sunday, October 16. Visitation will also be at the church one hour before the funeral. Funeral service is at 2:30 PM on Monday, October 17. There will be refreshments served afterward at the church. At 4 PM the procession to Calvary Cemetery in Wahpeton will begin.
