IN MEMORIAM

Steven Brown, a faithful soldier and citizen of state and church, was born in Starke February 16, 1847 and died August 9, 1923, at his home in Union county. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Brown, pioneer settlers. He married Miss Virginia Allen October 6, 1867; he became a widower December 29, 1913. To this anion eight children were born, viz: Mrs. E. L. Rogers, John C. Brown, Walter Brown and Mrs. Minnie Cole, of Lake Butler, H. O. Brown, of Starke, C. C. Brown, of Gainesville, and Mrs. C. C. Crawford, who died December 23, 1896. He is also survived by one brother, Isham Brown, of Alachua and several grandchildren. That many friends mourn his departure, was seen at the funeral, when a multitude from far and near gathered at his late home and escorted the remains to their last resting place.

The deceased served in the Confederate army during the War Between the States. He was a successful farmer and at one time a merchant. He identified himself with the Church of Christ, led a consecrated life and was appointed an elder. In 1891 he was appointed postmaster at Nebo and resigned in 1900; he was twice appointed Federal census enumerator. In politics he always affiliated with the Republican party, though failing health prevented him from being active in campaigns. He was a man of few words, but always ready to assist in any charitable, educational or religious cause.

The interment was at Midway cemetery, August 10th, the obsequies being conducted by Rev. J. O. Barres, of the Church of Christ, Lake City. The active pall bearers were, F. W. Edenfield, W. J. Markham, W. O. Brooks, G. W. Harrison, H. G. Crawford, J. T. Williams; honorary pallbearers were, T. T. Gay, E. R. Bielling, H. A. Carver, H. C. Peeples.
