Wilma June Conrad was born on June 28, 1929, in Marion, Kan., to Harvey Thomas and Della Rae (Gage) Conrad. She was the middle of three sisters surrounded by seven brothers. Taught to love Christ and serve others by their parents’ example, the family lived in Wichita, Kan.; Wenatchee, Wash.; and then in Sweet Home, Ore.

Offered an art scholarship for her talent, June chose instead to attend Multnomah School of the Bible, where she met her husband-to-be, David Edwin Lawrence. They married on Dec. 26, 1952. Dave was an Airman third class. They made homes and new friends in Texas, Colorado, England, Oregon, Florida and California, and were blessed with five children along the way: Dorothy, Sharon, Margaret, David and Carol. Traveling the world as an Air Force family gave June many opportunities to use her special gift of hospitality. The final leg of their 25-year Air Force career took the family to Edwards Air Force Base, where June’s warm wisdom worked its welcome on many who are extended “family” still.

Everywhere they lived June connected with people. Always active in a local church she was passionate about her faith and shared that joy through Child Evangelism, Vacation Bible School and Pioneer Girls. She sang in choirs, participated in and taught Women’s Bible Studies, and was active in small groups for many years.

She was a mentor to younger women always. A good cook, she was famous for her cinnamon bread. Her home had an open door — you just never knew who might join the family for Sunday dinner. Even if she had not planned on guests, she simply made everything stretch to accommodate those who were graced by the warm welcome. She was an inspiration to all and a true lady.

June loved on her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, whom she prayed for regularly. An artist, a seamstress, she was one who loved nature and whimsy — her talents were many and her heart was big.

Dave retired from the Air Force in 1974 as a Sr. Master Sergeant. After Air Force life, June and Dave embarked on several adventures together: Always a great team player, June was not a stranger to hard work, so she helped her husband however she could. They began a landscape endeavor in Saugus, and in Tehachapi a retail nursery and feed store, Farmer’s Supply, (now Mountain Gardens Nursery) and Four Seasons Landscape business, and Newmark’s Yacht Sales that included some live-aboard exploits in Oxnard. However, the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s/dementia took them back to Tehachapi to family and familiarity.

June battled Alzheimer’s for 18 years, slowly slipping away, but her default was kindness with a smile. What a gift! Cared for at home, the family so appreciates dear, sweet Ruth Morris for her many years of humble and willing caregiving; Deborah Brown and Sally Periman, who served without hesitation; and so many others from their church and community who reached out to help through the years — the family thanks you all! This last year, we had the added blessing of exceptional care and service to June by Hoffmann Hospice and their loving staff. She saw all her children in her last weeks and was serenaded at times with the hymns she loved. She passed with family by her side and the confidence of an eternal home in her heart.

June is survived by her devoted, care-giving husband of almost 64 years, David Lawrence, Sr.; children, Dorothy and Rick Gillies, Sharon and Greg Gerard, Margaret and Laszlo Veszpeller, David and Vina Lawrence, and Carol and Darrell Feil. June’s grandchildren: Phillip Gillies, Lino Gillies, Timothy Gillies, Ruby Gillies, Stephanie Marks, Rachel Veszpeller, David Veszpeller, Kamryn and Mike Pokorny, Charlie and Mandy Andre, Kristyn and Nathan Trujillo, Kathryn and Dylan Trujillo, Joshua and Cynthia Feil, Bethany Feil, and Mikayla Feil. Her great-grandchildren: Jesse, Joey, and Jasmyn Barajas, Madisyn, Clayton, and Corben Pokorny, Sydney and Ethan Andre, Charley and Gabriel Trujillo, and the newest addition, our little miracle, Copper David Trujillo. She is also survived by brothers, Dick and Don Conrad.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at 2 p.m., at Mountain Bible Church, 630 Maple St., Tehachapi. Interment took place on Oct. 19, 2016, at Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin.
