Sgt. Michael D. Smith of Bettendorf, Iowa was the son of Inez Smith Vidmar and was united in marriage to Kristine Mattly on September 1, 1996. in Cresco, Iowa. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1984 to 1987. He continued serving in the Army Reserves from 1988 until present. He deployed in support of Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Michael was also a member of the Davenport American Legion Post 26, where he was a member of their honor guard. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his sons. Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife, Kristine, and sons, Elijah and Noah; mother and stepfather, Inez and Victor Vidmar; sister, Ishala, brother, Mark; mother and father-in-law, Jerry and Myrna Mattly; grandmother, Nellie Smith and many nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; many cousins, including a special cousin, Chris and members of the 389th Engineer Battalion, past and present. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Reidar Smith and cousin, Keith Miene. Michael died while undergoing treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center for wounds received during his deployment to Iraq. Smith was injured in a truck accident while serving with the 389th Engineer Battalion from Dubuque, Iowa. He was 41.
