Robert M. Mattson, 75, passed away on a Saturday, at home.

He was the son of Fred and Mildred (Mickalson) Mattson.

In 1958, he moved with his family to Chicago, Ill., and was a 1963 graduate of the Washburn Trade School, leading him to begin his career as a carpenter. He was an apprentice and journeyman carpenter in 1963 for Carl B. Anderson in Chicago and after worked for many other contractors throughout Illinois.

Robert married Carol Solomon on July 8, 1961, in Chicago at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. They celebrated 55 years of marriage this past July. Three of their four children were born in Chicago.

In 1968, he moved his family back to the family farm in Escanaba, which is where they had their fourth child. Robert worked on phase 1 and 2 at the Escanaba Paper Mill and also on the construction of Christian Park Health Care Center. With his brothers, they had several farms together and raised beef cattle. He was a very accomplished carpenter and collectively with his brother and brothers-in-law in 1978, started Mattson Construction. Robert retired in 1988 due to a disability. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, motivating him on several trips with his brothers, brothers-in-law, friend, Ken Swanson, and late father, Fred. Robert and Carol spent many weekends together bowling on Friday night couple's league and square dancing with the Delta Merry Mixers.

He was an avid Packers fan attending numerous games and was also part of Michigan Carpenters Local 1510 for 57 years. Robert loved to sit in his chair in the kitchen and watch the birds, wild turkeys, and deer in the yard. He looked forward to the spring of the year when hummingbirds and barn swallows returned. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Robert M. Mattson was survived by: his wife, Carol Mattson; daughter, Kimberly (Eric) Drage; son, Carl Mattson; daughter-in-law, Wendy Mattson; grandchildren, Joshua Drage, Jacob Drage, Kyle Mattson, Barbara Mattson, Jessica Mattson, Drew Mattson, and Erin Mattson; great-grandson, Adrian DiGuido; sisters, Beverly Person and Michelle (fiance Fran Bjorkquist) Kozar; brothers, Roger, Keith, and Stephen Mattson; sister-in-law, Dorothy (James) Bouck; brother-in-law, John (Paula) Solomon; and many nieces and nephews.
