Biographical Information:

John's parents were Elizabeth Park and John Atkinson who had married Nov. 11, 1809 at St Mary's in Ulverston:
John Atkinson - Husbandman
Elizabeth Park - Spinster
Witness: Wm. Sandham; James Park
Married by Banns by: J. Sunderland
His father was listed in an alphabetical index in Parson & White's Directory as being a farmer at Ashbanks, Egton-cum-Newlands in 1829.

John, farmer at Rusland, and Ann Wilson of Gamswell, married on November 6th 1844 in St. Mary's Parish Church in Ulvertston. According to other census records, John was a grocer, a carter and a coal agent assistant in the course of his life.

In 1861 they dwelled at Canal Head. Their children were listed as Elizabeth (age 14), Mary Ann (b. 20 Aug. 1848), Lucy Ann Jane (b. 1 Sep. 1853) and John (age 4).

Christenings at St. Mary's Parish Church took place for the following children of an Ann and John Atkinson
on 2 Mar. 1856 David Atkinson,
on 24 Aug. 1856 John Atkinson,
on 22 Mar. 1857 Mary Ann Atkinson and on
19 Sep. 1858 John Myers Atkinson.

Daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Jones in 1869. According to the 1881 census they lived at Hart Street with John who was widowed and head of household. The Jones children were listed as his grandchildren: Ann Wilson Atkinson (Park), Mary Lizzie (Markham), Miriam Eleanor (later Mariah Eleanor Penny), John James Atkinson and Lucy Ann Jane (twins), William and Thomas Park Jones. In the 1901 census, Richard, age 19, Ada (Morcom), age 16, and Ann (later Amy Battersby), age 13, had since been born.

A record (UDUI/21/164 dated 17 Feb. 1922) held by the Cumbria Archive and Local Studies Centre at Barrow shows a conveyance from Elizabeth Jones, widow, administratrix of Thomas Jones, deceased, to John James Atkinson Jones (heir at Law of T.J.) both of Hart St., Ulverston -- dwelling house; formerly 2 dwelling houses in the Ellers, now no. 83, in the Ellers, used as a cloggers shop.

From "Chronicles of the Town & Church of Ulverston":
(a) The favourite Christian names in existence in Furness about a.d. 12oo were Bennet, Adam, Cudbert, Roger, Christopher, Rowland, and Robert. There is evidence which places this statement beyond dispute.

(b) Equally certain is it that in everyday life none of these were ever known as such. They were Ben, Atkin, Crud, Hodge, and Dodge, Chris (perhaps Case), Rawlin or Rowlin, and Robin or Dob.

(c) At this time (circa 12oo) surnames were becoming hereditary and as a large proportion of our patronymics are formed from baptismal names, every nick form or pet form then popular was a candidate for immortality.

(d) Hence Ben-son, Atkin-son, Crewd-son, or Crowd-son, Hodg-son, or Dodgshon, Cas-son (probably), Rawlin-son, or Rowling-son, and Dob-son, or Robin-son, are with us to-day, and represent some of the oldest families in Furness.
