Biographical Information:


Ann, daughter of Betty Ashburner and John Wilson of Gamswell, was christened at St. Mary's Parish Church, Ulverston, on May 8th 1825. Gamswell was a freehold estate or farm on a hill overlooking Ulverston.


Siblings of Ann at Gamswell were James (bapt. Nov. 3, 1816), possibly Memorial 216644216, Richard (bapt. Apr. 12, 1818), John born Mar. 17, 1820 (bapt. Apr. 23, 1820), Betty (bapt. Apr. 7, 1822), Mary and Jane (bapt. Apr. 3, 1828).


Ann's brother, Richard, husbandman, married Agnes Fell of Tarn Close (daughter of Thomas Fell) on Oct. 12, 1839. Ann's sister, Mary, married William Atkinson of Stoney Crag, Osmotherley, on Mar. 20, 1847. Jane married Thomas Clark of Horace Farm in May of 1849.


Ann married John Atkinson on November 6th 1844 in St. Mary's Parish Church, Ulvertston. In 1851 Ann and John's children were listed on the census as Elizabeth (4), Mary Ann (2) and James (0). According to the 1861 census, they dwelled at Canal Head. The children recorded were Elizabeth (age 14), Mary Ann (b. 20 Aug. 1848), Lucy Ann Jane (b. 1 Sep. 1853) and John (age 4).


Other christenings at St. Mary's Parish Church took place for the following children of an Ann and John Atkinson

Daughter Elizabeth (1847-1928) married Thomas Jones (1848-1919), son of William, in 1869. According to the 1881 Census they lived at Hart Street with Ann's widowed husband, John Atkinson. The Jones children were: Ann Wilson Atkinson (Park), Mary Lizzie (Markham), Miriam or Maria Eleanor (later Mariah E. Penny), John James Atkinson and Lucy Ann Jane (twins), William, Thomas Park, Richard, Ada (Morcom) and Amy (later Battersby), the later 3 first appearing on the 1891 Census.


Ann's granddaughter Mariah Eleanor (aka Nellie, nee Jones) Penny emigrated to America. Mariah was born April 28 1872 and m. James Christopherson Penny on 10 Sep 1890 at the Parish Church in Ulverston. He was born 1871 to Martha and John Penny in Colton.
