Biographical information:

Betty was the daughter of Mary Townson (1746-1831) and Richard Ashburner (1750-1833) of Gamswell, a farm located 600 feet above sea level northwest of Ulverston in the township of Osmotherley. Richard was the son of Thomas Ashburner and his wife, Ann Cragg (buried December 19th 1762). Ann was the daughter of William Cragg of Martin, a yeoman.

Mary Townson and Richard Ashburner were married on December 27th 1777 in Ulverston. Their son, Thomas, was baptised at St. Mary's on September 22nd 1782. Another son, John, was baptised there on August 22nd 1784. Richard was recorded to be a husbandman at the time.

Richard was listed a yeoman in "PRINCIPAL INHABITANTS OF CUMBERLAND AND WESTMORLAND 1829" (an alphabetical index of the names in Parson & White's Directory). He died aged 84 and was buried on December 25th 1833 at St. Mary's Parish Church.

Betty Ashburner was baptised at St. Mary's Parish Church in Ulverston on October 8th, 1786. She married John Wilson on July 13th 1816 at St. Mary's Parish Church in Ulverston. A birth record for one of their son's lists John as being a "husbandman" in 1820.

Assuming her husband was of the same generation, there were plenty of John Wilsons born in the Ulverston area. Was her husband one of these baptised at St. Mary's Parish Church:
26 Jan. 1782, son of James Wilson, soapboiler;
10 Mar. 1782, son of Thomas Wilson, barber of P. Bridge;
12 Aug. 1782 son of John Talbot Wilson, mariner of Hodge Puddle;
6 Jul. 1783 son of Leonard Wilson of Lower Scarthwaite;
28 Dec. 1783 son of John Talbot Wilson, mariner; or
25 Apr. 1790 son of Jonathan Wilson, labourer?

According to this gravestone Betty was from Gamswell and was born in the year that Mary Townson Ashburner gave birth to her daughter Betty at Gamswell. This information would negate her having married a Joseph Backhouse or having died in 1823. Betty Wilson's will, dated January 31st, 1852, is held by the Lancashire Archives (Reference R 398c/22). On that document she was listed as a widow. Her daughter, Ann, also buried here, married John Atkinson of Ulverston.

Exerpt from "Chronicles of the Town & Church of Ulverston":
"Coming to manufacturing industries, Ashburner, of course, we owe to iron ore; and it is distinctively one of the oldest names in Furness, and of purely native growth. There are
several stocks, and several ramifications of each, so that the name is not likely to die out. William de Lancaster, when Conishead was erected into a priory, gave a " bloom-smithy" to its use, with iron ore from Plumpton, and all the dead wood in Blawith, 'for making charcoal.' "
"In our Ashburners we go back to the very infancy of the manufacture of pig (Ed.: iron). It was evidently a general term, covering the whole process. Thus the ash -burner not merely made charcoal, but smelted. He was a manufacturer, rather than a woodman, and, in fact, was the precursor of our larger capitalists of to-day. But his name reminds us once more of the wooded tract in which he lived. "

* Even Low Furness, in Stephen's Grant, is called the 'Forest of Furness and Walney'. High Furness continued till a recent period a continuous woodland. (West, p. xlv.)
