Cindy Pierce was a woman with a deep compassion and commitment for the things she was passionate about. She demonstrated her giving heart in various ways that brought joy to others and a smile in their hearts. Her selfless, giving spirit was evident in all she did, but foremost in her heart was the love she held for her family. Everyone who spent time with Cindy felt the warmth of her presence. Just as abruptly and unforeseen as Cindy has been taken, there is nothing that can erase the memory of having known or loved her. Her memory will remain a lasting reminder of her love and dedication.

As the nation welcomed Hawaii as the 50th state, life in America was booming with industry and manufacturing. The American dream was realized as families moved into the suburbs while the new ’59 Chevy Station Wagon was all the rage. Technology was at an all time high when NASA introduced the nations first astronauts to the world and the computer modem began its infancy. While tensions began overseas with talk of impending war, Gordon and Loyse (Elliott) Hueschen of Kalamazoo, Michigan celebrated the birth of their first daughter, Cynthia Loyse, on March 16, 1959.

The second of eventually four children, Cindy grew up alongside her older brother Mike and later became a caring big sister to Debbie and Derek. The Hueschen family made their home in Kalamazoo where Cindy’s father practiced law. Before her children came along, Cindy’s mother worked as a secretary and also taught at Western Michigan University. Raised as a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Cindy was the first of 3 generations in her family to be baptized and confirmed there. While enjoying a typical childhood, Cindy always displayed a caring heart towards others. She was a good friend to many throughout her school days while attending Kalamazoo Public Schools. When it came time for high school, Cindy transferred to nearby Otsego High School where she graduated with the Class of 1978. Throughout her life, Cindy loved music from the 70s and also acquired her father’s love for jazz music, too.

Following high school Cindy worked a few years for several area manufacturers, but it was on New Year’s Eve in 1981when her life took on new meaning. While at the Old Otsego Inn with friends, Cindy’s heart was captured by a guy playing in the band named Warren Pierce. Just the same, Warren’s eye was directed towards Cindy and after one of his sets he approached the girl’s table for conversation. From that point on, Warren and Cindy have been together. They dated for a time and soon fell in love. On September 3, 1983 they exchanged vows of marriage before a congregation of family and friends at Plainwell United Methodist Church. Warren’s favorite memory of their wedding day included Cindy nervously repeating the same mistake when reciting her vows. In time Cindy and Warren were blessed with four children in their lives. Cindy’s world revolved around her family. Her husband and children, Michael, Lance, Tyler, and Erica brought much joy to her heart.

A stay-at-home mom, Cindy thoroughly enjoyed her kids when they were growing up and loved taking them to visit her parents who lived on Gull Lake. She loved to bake wonderful goodies for her family and her homemade lasagna was a family favorite. Cindy’s love was unmatched when she became a loving grandmother to Gordon, Kaylee and Hannah. She loved having her grandkids at her house, but the feeling was mutual because it always proved to be a fun filled time when they were with her. There was another special granddaughter in Cindy’s life named Christin who sadly died in 2007 from S.I.D.S. Her sudden death was understandably a tragic time for Cindy and her family, but they used their grief in a positive way as a crusade to shine an educational light on S.I.D.S. The entire family came together in this effort in memory of little Christin.

With the biggest heart one could imagine, Cindy would use her last penny to help someone. She used her love for baking not only for the delight of her family but to help others as well. In fact, Cindy was passionate about baking. She was known to bake an array of baked goods she lovingly prepared and gave to the needy during the holidays. Her heart was always focused in this endeavor for Kristine’s large community kitchen located at the community center in town. Warren and Cindy shared a heart for kids. Their home was always open to those in need and became a community center so to speak for area kids. It wasn’t uncommon to find someone sleeping on their couch as they took kids in when needed. Along with baking, Cindy was also a big history buff. She was especially interested in Egyptian history and had hopes of visiting there one day, but with the unsettling times in the country, Cindy never realized this dream. An avid reader of various genres, it would be impossible to count the number of books Cindy had read throughout her life.

Last week Cindy went to the doctor to be seen for some back pain she was experiencing. They soon discovered that cancer had spread throughout her entire body. She was encouraged to stay in the hospital, but all Cindy could think of was to be at home with her family. She went home, and sadly without warning, Cindy passed away the very next day in the peaceful setting of her home.

Loving, giving, compassionate and big hearted, Cindy Pierce was a true blessing in the lives of many. It came natural to her as her selfless, giving spirit was evident in all she did. She will be dearly missed.
