After his military career, Donald returned to Minnesota and worked on various jobs until ultimately becoming a carpenter.

Donald married Patricia Fiandaca on September 11, 1953 and together they had three children, Don, Jim, and Molly. After Patricia passed away in 1998, Donald spent most of his time in Moorhead.
