Francis served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on F-7A #42-73044, 20th Combat Mapping Squadron, 6th Photographic Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Fairfield County, Connecticut prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on August 1, 1942 in Hartford, Connecticut. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Waiter and also as Single, without dependents.

F-7A #42-73044, while returning from a mission, blew a tire while landing at Saidor, New Guinea which caused them to crash into an embankment and burst into flames during the war.

Francis was "Killed In Action" in this accident.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
