Grant was born on July 26, 1926, to Baxter Humphries and Dora V. Johnson Humphries in Jerome, Idaho.
He had a great love for the town of Jerome and the people here; most of his treasured memories occurred here. Grant learned the value of hard work at an early age while doing various jobs around town. At the age of 14, he began working for the Safeway store in Jerome and continued to work there for the next 48 years. Grant attended Jerome city schools and was just short of high school graduation when he entered the Navy. After completing his military service, Grant returned to Jerome High School and, while working full time, graduated with high marks. It was during this time that he met his eternal companion, LaRue Pearce, and they married on April 5, 1947. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah, IDS temple. From that moment on, Grant and LaRue have been inseparable sweethearts.
Grant was an avid sports fan. He had an impact on the lives of many young men in Jerome while serving as their Little League baseball coach. Grant was also the president of the Jerome Baseball Association. He was an experienced fisherman and spent many hours fishing with his wife, his daughter, Patty, his sons,, grandsons, and his best friend, Don Weeks.
Grant had a deep and abiding testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in numerous callings, which included being bishop of the Jerome 1st Ward for eight years. Always eager to learn, Grant was grateful for the opportunity he had to acquire an associate of arts degree at the College of Southern Idaho and was a member of the first graduating class at the Twin Falls site. He was also a talented public speaker.
However, of all of Grant's accomplishments, he was most proud of his family. He was the father of six wonderful children, and he delighted in spending time with his family. Grant and LaRue rarely missed a recital, a sports event or a wedding in which their children or grandchildren were involved. From him, his children learned to respect their leaders, to develop their faith in Christ and to work diligently.
Grant is survived by his wife, LaRue; and by his children, Grant B. Jr. of Golden Valley, Ariz.; Carol Sue (David) Heber of Taft, Calif.; Michael of Anchorage, Alaska; Patty (Jeff) Ward of Jerome; Kathy (Aden) Jensen of Logan, Utah; and Marty (Sonja) Humphries of Jerome; a sister, Maxine Vanwagner of Mapleton, Utah; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Kenneth; and his sister, Shirley Weeks.
