Deputy Sheriff dead.

WW Carey, the colored man of Buxton who was recently appointed deputy Sheriff by Sheriff Donor died at Buxton December 8, of injuries received in the mine. He had not yet entered the duties of deputy, but his bonds were being arranged. And speaking of him the Buxton Gazette said:

W.W. Carey, a high degree Mason and highly respected citizen, died at his residence, 10 E. 7th St. last Tuesday morning at 7 AM from the effects of injuries received at mine 10. He was thrown off the engine on which he was riding from his work, breaking three ribs and collarbone. Mr. Carey was visited by many friends last Sunday but none seem to realize that he was fatally stricken although he seemed to be in terrific misery and remained so until death relieved his suffering and he joined the Angels band around the throne of God.

Buxton Iowa, December 10 - W.W.

Mr. Carey was a Deputy Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of the state of Iowa and jurisdiction.

He belonged to the G.U.O.F. Lodge number 2209, Buxton Iowa, president of the colored colony of Buxton, one of the 40 man that built the Baptist church of which he was a member and deacon at the time of his death; he was also an ex-Constable of old Muchakinock. Mr. Carey was a man of good character and his death will be long felt by all.

The funeral took place at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Friday afternoon and was largely attended by friends of the family. Rev. Griffith of Des Moines officiated and preached an appropriate sermon, assisted by Rev. Mendenhall. The solemncy of occasion was made most effective by the rendition of several sweet selections by the choir.

The Masonic Lodge, headed by the famous Buxton band led the line of March from the house to the church thence to the Buxton cemetery. Mr. Kerry is survived by a loving wife, two sons, a daughter, two brothers and a number of distant relations. Funeral director Wesley Brock, of the W.A. Wells store, had charge of the obsequies.
