Owen R. Blount was born Dec. 30, 1830, in Beaufort District, South Carolina. He moved to Columbia County, Fla. in 1835 with his parents. He grew up there and married about 1848 Henrietta E. C. Bronson, daughter of James Bronson. She was born July 22, 1833, in SC. In 1851 the Blount family moved to Hillsborough County (now Polk Co.). Owen moved with the rest of his family at that time. He settled about two miles southwest of present day Bartow. Henrietta was baptized on Jan. 8, 1855, and Owen on Jan. 9, 1855, into the Peas Creek Baptist Church. Owen R. Blount served in Capt. L. G. Lesley's Company, Fla. Mounted Volunteer , enlisting Jan. 3, 1856, at Ft. Blount and mustering out Aug. 20, 1856, at Ft. Meade. He was a Sergeant in the campaign. He also served in the Civil War in his brother Nathan's Company E., 7th Regiment, Fla. Infantry, better known as the "South Florida Bulldogs." He enlisted April 18, 1862, at Ft. Meade, as a private and served until he was discharged on February 13, 1863. He returned to Polk Co. and continued farming. The tax lists for 1866 and 1867 show he owned 150 acres there. He moved to Manatee County sometime in the late 1860s. Owen R. Blount's name is shown on a list of residents between the ages of 18 and 45 liable for military service in Manatee County. He lived at Joshua Creek in present day DeSoto County. He move to Monroe (now Lee) County in 1878 and settled near Orange River. He was the founder of the Buckingham community where he planted a large citrus grove. He sold the grove in 1896 for $17,000. Henrietta (Bronson) Blount died December 4, 1896, in Lee County. Owen is shown in the 1900 census for Lee county residing with his son, Radford Blount. He died at the home of his son-in-law, Henry Cason, on Orange River, August 17, 1902. Owen and Henrietta are buried at Buckingham Cemetery. His will dated July 26, 1902, is found in his probate files in Lee County.
