LeRoy Russell McDonald, son of Viva L. (Leach) McDonald and Johnson R. McDonald, was born June 28, 1918 in Macksburg, Iowa. He graduated from Afton High School. On Nov. 28, 1940, he married Hazel L. Henry in Phoenix, Arizona. LeRoy served in the United State Army in the 42nd Infantry of the Rainbow Division during World War II. Later, he worked for Anderson Erickson Dairy in wholesale delivery. He lived and worked in Phoenix, Ariz., Zearing, and Afton, and moving to Creston in approximately 1951. He did carpentry work for many years, retiring in 1975. Hazel died March 26, 2003. LeRoy was a longtime member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Creston, member of the American Legion Post #70 of Creston, and was a volunteer with the Habitat for Humanity Team in Creston.
Survivors include three daughters, Karen (husband Lewis) Clark of Colorado Springs, Colo., Barbara (husband Allan) Faidley of Winterset, and Kristine (husband Jack) Cheers of Stanton; eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren; a brother, Dale McDonald of Creston; three sisters, Leona Kirkland of Winterset, Ruby Dibel of Creston, and Bonnie Pulliam of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers-in-law, William H. "Bill" (wife Thelma) Henry, Jr. of Cantonsville, Md., and Rev. Charles (wife Harriet) Henry of Des Moines; four sisters-in-law, Donna McDonald of Diagonal, Beulah McDonald of Creston, Ruth Cole of Afton and Gertrude Sieck of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Aunt Ruth Wambold of Creston.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers, Francis, LaVerne, J.R., Wayne and Dean McDonald, and a sister, Eleanor Hammons.
