Mr. Billy Bowman, age 81, of the Glenwood community, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at Four Seasons Hospice in Hendersonville following several years of declining health.  A native of McDowell County, he was born on January 31, 1935 and was a son of the late Willie and Ila Reel Bowman.  He joined the U. S. Navy as a young man and served his country faithfully.  While in the service he was trained in the Navy Firefighting School in Guam where he learned valuable skills that he was able to utilize later in life in his own community.  He was retired as a carpenter.  He was a kindhearted man and was always available to help someone in need.  He especially loved working around the house and particularly enjoyed making a garden every year.  Mostly, though, he loved his wife, children and grandchildren and they will all miss him very much.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Gladys Reel Bowman of the home; two children, Jeff Bowman and wife Kady of Asheville and Becky Bowman of Old Fort; two brothers, Bob Bowman of Nebo and Jimmy Bowman of Marion; a sister, Janie Mullinax of Marion; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral home in Marion with Rev. Dennis Love officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:0 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will follow in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain
