Gary was born April 28, 1933 at Underwood, ND, McLean County, the son of Lloyd and Lottie (Ash) Mitchell. He was raised and grew to manhood in McLean County, where he also received his public education. In 1952, he entered the Navy Seabee's during the Korean War, and received his Honorable Discharge in 1956. Gary married Diane Arneson on December 24, 1957 at Crookston, MN. While he was employed as a grain elevator manager, the couple lived and made their home in various communities including Edmore, ND, Whitman, ND, Oklee, MN, Grygla, MN, Bruce, SD and Page, ND. In 1985 they moved to Fordville, ND and purchased Mitch's Bar. He also did city maintenance in Fordville. Gary was also employed in the power plant at the State Development Center in Grafton. Mrs. Mitchell preceded him in death in 1998. He continued to live in Fordville until moving to the Veterans Home in 2014.
Surviving members of his family include his daughter: Julie Rachac, Fargo, ND; sons James (Marla) Mitchell, Arlington, SD and Brian Mitchell, Grafton, ND; grandchildren: Daniel, Landon, Tianna, Breanna, Devin, Kelsey, Alexa, and Jordan; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, great-grandson, parents and brother Walter.
