Jeannie passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, October 1, 2016 in her home in Gallipolis, Ohio. Jeannie was born Christmas Day 1933 in Ironton, Ohio, to Clare LaShure Allyn and Lillian Bradley Allyn. Jeannie spent her early years living with her grandmother, “Mom” Bradley, in Kentucky and would later proudly say “I swung from the holler on a vine!” She was a graduate of Ironton High School and Ohio State University School of Nursing. While at OSU, she met the man she would spend the next 57 years with. She met Gene Abels on a blind date, and the rest is history! They married on a snowy Christmas Day in 1956. After living in Georgia for a few years they moved to Gallipolis, Ohio in 1961, where they remained for the rest of their lives.
Jeannie worked as a nurse for several years yet, gave up her career to devote herself fully to raising her four children and caring for their many dogs and cats. She was a fabulous cook and many of our friends loved to come to our house and enjoy the world’s best fried chicken and gravy or lasagna.
Jeannie enjoyed gardening, and in her later years delighted in sitting on the porch gazing at the flowers and birds and seeing her Japanese Maple blaze with color. She was a world traveler and visited over 40 countries, sharing the wonderful memories with family and friends.
She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Fleurs and Philomathean Clubs. She donated generously to the church, The French Art Colony, The Ariel Theater, The Bossard Library, the Friends of Gallia County Animals and various other charities.
Jeannie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gene; her son, Brad; brother, David and her uncle, Harold “Gills” Bradley.
