John Samuel Thurston was the son of Peleg and Ruth (Lawton) Thurston of Portsmouth, R.I. He was born there Sept. 26, 1799. He was married in Newport, R.I. by Rev. Michael Eddy to Hannah Barker Lawton on June 22, 1822. She was the daughter of William and Sarah (Barker) Lawton of Portsmouth.

He was in the navy in the war of 1812, in the vessel that took the British ship Nimrod, at Portsmouth, when 13 years of age. He became a steam engine manufacturer and went to the West Indies to set up steam engines. He ran the Spanish steamer Almandar between Havana and Matanzas, which was wrecked, lying at the wharf, in the hurricane of 1844, after which he returned to Providence, R.I. He died Jan. 7, 1879; she was a member of the Central Baptist church, died July 1, 1887. They had seven children:

(1) Elizabeth Lawton - born Dec. 23, 1823 in Portsmouth; married Jan. 29, 1843 to Henry Gardner Luther of Swansea, Mass., a collector of bills in Providence, R.I. She died Jan. 8, 1890.
(2) Phebe Lawton - born Nov. 7, 1825 in Providence; not married.
(3) John Babcock - born Feb. 26, 1829 in Providence; married 1st Sophia Allen Capwell; 2nd Adeline Almy Wilbur. He was a photographer in Providence, and died March 24, 1881. [his wives, Sophia A. and Addy A. appear to be buried in Grace Church Cemetery]
(4) William Henry - born April 12, 1832; died June 17, 1838.
(5) George Stratton - born July, 26, 1834; married Sept. 25, 1854 to Jerusha W. Heath. He is a machinist and engineer; served as an engineer in the US navy in the war against the rebellion.
(6) Sarah Hart - born sept. 23, 1836 in Providence; not married.
(7) Ruth Hannah - born Oct. 5, 1839; married Dec 13, 1857 to Daniel Henry Matthewson, a lapidary, since foreman Rumford Chemical Works, Providence.
