Following his graduation from Westminster College in Salt Lake City, he moved to Portland and began his career in advertising and marketing with the Gerber Agency in 1937. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific Fleet, 8th Naval District, New Orleans. Mitchell later formed his own agency, Everett Mitchell Advertising Inc., which he operated for 24 years.
In 1968, he served the U.S. State Department as a marketing specialist for USAID activities in South America and represented Oregon at the International Conference of American States in Lima, Peru. Mitchell was an active member of the Portland Chamber of Commerce, the Portland Kiwanis Club, Oregon Advertising Club, Columbia Empire Toastmasters and Unlimited Progress. He was a member of the President's Society of the University of Oregon and a longtime member of both the Multnomah Athletic Club and Riverside Golf and Country Club. An avid golfer, he also served as a one-time President of the AGA of Oregon. Mitchell also served more than 30 years on the Columbia Pacific Council, Boy Scouts of America in local, regional and national capacities; including three National Jamborees.
Mitchell was preceded in death by daughter, Peggy in 1966; wife, Hazel in 1985; son, Randall in 1999; wife, Ruth in 2010; brothers, Roy and Glenn; and sister, Shirley. He is survived by sisters, Dorothy Phillip of Lakewood, Wash. and June Aylen of Edgewood, Wash.; granddaughter, Erinn Warner; and great-grandchildren, Jade and Mitchell Warner of Portland.
A private burial has been held at Lincoln Memorial Park Collonades. All friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of life at 12 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Summerfield Golf Clubhouse, 10650 SW Summerfield Drive, Tigard.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be made to the Peggy Mitchell Memorial Presidential Student Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Oregon, 1720 E 13th Avenue, Suite 410, Eugene, OR.
