Sevren G. Honstead
NAMPA — Funeral services for Sevren G. Honstead, 83, of 902 Meadowview Drive, a long-time business leader in the Nampa community who died Tuesday evening at a Nampa nursing home following a short illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Alsip Funeral Chapel.
Pastor Marvin E. Greene, of Trinity Lutheran Church of Nampa, will officiate. Interment will follow at Cloverdale Cemetery near Boise.
Mr. Honstead was born Dec. 30, 1887, at Blue Earth, Minn., and was reared in Minnesota and in Idaho, coming to Idaho at the age of 14 years, he lived at Silver City for a time, and then in the Boise Valley. He was a graduate of Boise High School, and attended the University of Idaho at Moscow. He was married to Ada Peterson on June 10, 1914, at Red Lodge, Montana.
Active in business for many years, he started the first Self Service Grocery Store in Nampa in 1925. Prior to that time he had been employed by the Idaho Power Company. He remained active in business and community affairs throughout his lifetime.
He was the founder of the Honstead Motor Company in 1939, and was responsible for the erection of several of the buildings in the present downtown Nampa business area. He served as mayor of the city of Nampa from 1945 until 1947. He had been active in serving on the Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church for a number of years, and had served on the Bishop's Council of the Church. He was a baptized and confirmed member of the Lutheran Church.
He was a senior member and past president of the Nampa Kiwanis Club; member and past president of the Nampa Chamber of Commerce; a member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army, and last fall, received special recognition for his outstanding service to the Salvation Army; and a member of the Knife & Fork Club, of Boise. He was a 59-year member of Nampa B.P.O.E. No. 1389; a member of Ashlar Lodge No. 90, A.F.& A.M., of Nampa; member and and Past High Priest of Cyrus Chapter No. 2, Royal Arch Masons, of Nampa; member of the Boise Consistory of the Scottish Rite Bodies; and a member of the El Korah Shrine, of Boise.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ada P. Honstead, of Nampa; by three daughters, Mrs. Frank C. (Irene) Bevington, of Nampa, Mrs. R. Baker (Helen) Young, of Nampa, and Mrs. George P. (Marjory) Fahr, of Minneapolis, Minn.; by 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews.
Contributions may be given to The Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children, or the Idaho Youth Ranch at Rupert, Idaho, or flowers may be sent.
