Son of Judge Thornsberry A. and Effie Adeline Hargrove Gray. He moved with his family to Batesville at an early age.
He was a graduate of Batesville High School and Arkansas College, now Lyon College. He did graduate studies in chemistry at Oklahoma State University at Stillwater and earned his doctor of dental surgery degree at Washington University School of Dentistry at St. Louis. In 1946 he married the former Helen Wade of LaMonte, MO.
Dr. Gray practiced dentistry in Newport for 43 years. He was past president of the Northeast Arkansas Dental Assn. for 10 years, past cahirman of the legislative committee of the State Dental Assn., a life member of the American Dental Assn., a fellow of the American College of Dentists and a member of the Academy of General Dentists.
Dr. Gray was active in business and civic affairs. He was a member of the Newport Board of Education for 10 years and served as president for six years. He served as chairman of the board of directors of Jackson Co. Industrial Development Corp. and was a member of Newport Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
For 10 years he served on the board of directors of Arkansas Industrial Development Commission, first appointed by Gov. Dale Bumpers and reappointed by Gov. Frank White. He was a member of the board of directors of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and the Old-timers Committee.
Since 1968 Dr. Gray had served as a member of the board of directors of Merchants and Planters Bank of Newport and Greers Ferry Lake State Bank of Heber Springs.
Dr. Gray was a member of the Newport Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a past president and charter member of the Newport Country Club and one of the founders and former presidents of thee Newport Investment Club.
He was a former president and one of the founders of the GPW Nursing Home in Newport and founder and owner of Lakeland Lodge Nursing Home at Hebre Springs. In 1992 Dr. Gray was selected Outstanding Citizen of Jackson County.
A veteran of World War II, Dr. Gray also served in the Korean Conflict for two yeras with a rank of captain. He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
As a life-long Methodist and 60-year member of the First United Methodist Church of Newport, Dr. Gray served on the board of trustees, the finance committee and the offical board.
Dr. Gray was preceded in death by his parents; a brother who died in infancy; two sisters, Enid Gladys Larson and Vera Jean Harris; and one brother, Norman Bryan Gray.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen Wade Gray; two sons, Troy Anderson Gray and wife Linda Sue of Eureka Springs, and David Kemp Gray and wife Mary Christina of Springdale; four grandchildren, Robin Marlene Gray-Urgelles and husband Raul of Coral Gavels, FL, Amy Suzanne Gray of Honoloulu, Travis Allen Gray of Fayeteville and Kelsey Helen Gray of Springdale; and many nieces and nephews.
